Information / History
The
Kanha National Park, in Madhya Pradesh, forms
the core of the Kanha Tiger Reserve created in
1974, under Project Tiger. Stretching over 940
sq km, the vegetation, chiefly made of sal and
bamboo forests, grasslands and streams, this park
is the sole habitat of the rare hardground barasingha.
It lies in the Mandhla district in the Maikal
hills which are the part of the Satpura range.
Originally, the area was famed as a hunter's paradise
& especially for its teeming herds of Barasingha.
The valley has been well developed to accommodate
visitors & display the rich fauna. Forest
Department Guides accompany visitors around the
Park on mapped out circuits which naturalists
to see a good cross-section of Kanha's wildlife.
The best areas are the meadows around Kanha where
blackbuck, cheetal (spotted deer) & barasingha
can be seen throughout the day. Bamni Dadar (Sunset
Point) affords a view of the dense jungle &
animals that can be sighted from here are typical
of the mixed forest zone: sambhar, barking deer,
gaur (bison) & chausingha (four horned antelope).
